A 54-year-old West Sacramento man has been charged with felony gun and drug offenses after a traffic stop revealed he was in possession of a handgun, ammunition, and methamphetamine, according to federal prosecutors.
Rudy Tafoya, 54, was stopped by police in May 2021 for a traffic violation. During the stop, officers discovered ammunition, a firearm, and methamphetamine in his possession.
Tafoya was previously convicted of being a felon in possession of a firearm and was on supervised release at the time of the traffic stop. He has six prior felony convictions, including two crimes of violence, which prohibit him from possessing firearms or ammunition.
The case is the result of an investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Yolo County District Attorney’s Office, and the West Sacramento Police Department.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Emily Sauvageau is prosecuting the case, which carries a maximum statutory penalty of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine on the ammunition and firearm counts and up to an additional year for the methamphetamine count.
Tafoya is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. The charges are part of the joint federal, state, and local Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) Program, aimed at reducing violent crime in the community.
PSN is an evidence-based program that has proven effective at reducing violent crime. The program partners with locally based prevention and reentry programs to develop comprehensive solutions to address violent crime.
