Eric Wayne Grinder, Production of Child Pornography, Maryland 2019

Eric Wayne Grinder, 36, of Westminster, Maryland, was sentenced to 30 years in federal prison after a jury convicted him on multiple counts of producing and possessing child pornography, along with witness tampering. U.S. District Judge Catherine C. Blake handed down the sentence, which includes lifetime supervised release, marking one of the most severe penalties in recent federal child exploitation cases in Maryland.

Grinder was found guilty on February 25, 2019, following a three-day trial that exposed a years-long pattern of sexual abuse and digital evidence hoarding. He was convicted on five counts of production of child pornography, one count of attempted production, two counts of possession, and one count of witness tampering. Upon release, Grinder must register as a sex offender under the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA) in every jurisdiction where he lives, works, or studies.

Court evidence revealed that between June 2013 and August 2016, Grinder sexually abused a minor girl when she was between seven and nine years old. During that time, he produced graphic images of himself engaging in sexually explicit conduct with the child. Investigators recovered these files from his laptop and cellphone, devices also used to store additional child pornography depicting prepubescent minors.

The prosecution detailed further efforts by Grinder to evade justice. In July 2017, he wrote a letter urging an associate to coerce the victim into falsely claiming she had taken the abuse photos—not him. Authorities said Grinder repeatedly attempted to contact and manipulate the victim’s mother, obstructing the investigation and endangering the child’s emotional safety.

The case was prosecuted under Project Safe Childhood, a Department of Justice initiative launched in 2006 to combat the rising tide of child sexual exploitation. The program combines federal, state, and local law enforcement resources to track down offenders, dismantle networks, and rescue victims. This case involved coordinated efforts from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), the Maryland State Police, the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, and the Carroll County State’s Attorney’s Office.

U.S. Attorney for the District of Maryland Robert K. Hur praised the investigative teams for their relentless pursuit of justice. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Paul Riley and Paul Budlow led the prosecution. “This sentence reflects the severity of Grinder’s crimes,” Hur stated. “He preyed on a child, documented his abuse, and then tried to shift blame. Today, he faces the full consequences.”
