A man who had already served time for assaulting his intimate partner is now facing additional prison time after pleading guilty to escaping from custody.
William Valencia, 33, of Paguete, New Mexico, was convicted in January 2020 of assault of an intimate partner by strangling and suffocating. He was sentenced to 75 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release.
Valencia was being held at the Dismas Charities Diersen Residential Reentry Center in Albuquerque to serve the last 6 months of his custodial sentence. However, on July 27, 2023, he left the facility without permission and failed to return.
Valencia was arrested by the Albuquerque Police Department on October 6, 2023, for possession of a controlled substance and was taken into federal custody on October 10, 2023.
At sentencing, Valencia faces up to five years in prison. He will remain in custody pending sentencing, which has not yet been scheduled.
The United States Marshals Service investigated this case, and Assistant United States Attorney Jesse Pecoraro prosecuted the case.
This case is a reminder that escaping from custody is a serious offense and can result in additional prison time. Valencia’s actions were a clear violation of the terms of his release and demonstrate a lack of respect for the law and the justice system.
