MIAMI, FL – In a stunning turn of events, Willie Curry, a former Miami-Dade County Network Manager, has been sentenced to six months in federal prison for his fraudulent application to the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) seeking a $160,000 COVID-19 relief loan.
Curry, 58, pleaded guilty to wire fraud and was also ordered to serve one year of supervised release following his imprisonment. His scheme involved fabricating the existence of ‘Will Curry Computers’ and falsely claiming substantial revenue and employment during the pandemic period.
Despite being a well-compensated County employee who suffered no salary loss due to COVID-19, Curry attempted to secure the loan under the guise of sole proprietorship owner. His deception was ultimately exposed when the SBA’s financial institution returned the funds after discovering the fraud.
Judge James Lawrence King took into account Curry’s seven years of military service in determining his sentence. Assistant U.S. Attorney Edward N. Stamm prosecuted the case, which was investigated by the FBI Miami’s Area Corruption Task Force and other agencies.
Curry’s crime underscores the Department of Justice’s relentless pursuit of COVID-19 fraudsters. The investigation into Curry’s activities is part of a broader effort to protect public funds from those who seek to exploit the crisis for personal gain.
The sentence was announced by U.S. Attorney Juan Antonio Gonzalez, FBI Miami Special Agent in Charge George L. Piro, and SBA-OIG Special Agent in Charge Amaleka McCall-Brathwaite.
