PIERRE, SD – Clayton Spotted Calf, 30, of Winner, South Dakota, will spend the next decade in federal prison after being sentenced for the horrific abuse of a child. U.S. District Judge Eric C. Shulte handed down the 10-year sentence on August 5, 2025, followed by five years of supervised release. The sentence also includes a $100 payment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund – a paltry sum considering the damage inflicted.
Spotted Calf was initially indicted by a federal grand jury in June 2024 and subsequently pleaded guilty on April 14, 2025. The details of the case paint a disturbing picture of sustained predatory behavior. Between approximately April 2015 and June 2017, Spotted Calf repeatedly engaged in abusive sexual contact with a child residing in Todd County, South Dakota, within the boundaries of the Rosebud Sioux Indian Reservation. The victim was between six and eight years old during the period of abuse.
The case landed in federal court due to the Major Crimes Act, a law that mandates federal prosecution of certain violent crimes occurring within Indian Country. This isn’t about jurisdiction; it’s about ensuring these crimes are pursued with the full weight of federal resources, something often lacking at the state level. The South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation and the FBI jointly investigated the case, piecing together evidence that led to Spotted Calf’s conviction.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Kirk Albertson led the prosecution, presenting a case that clearly demonstrated the severity of Spotted Calf’s actions. This wasn’t an isolated incident; it was a pattern of abuse that robbed a child of their innocence and security. The Grimy Times doesn’t shy away from these grim realities – we report them because someone must hold predators accountable.
This case is part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in 2006 by the Department of Justice. The project aims to combat the pervasive issue of child sexual exploitation and abuse by coordinating federal, state, and local resources to identify, apprehend, and prosecute offenders and rescue victims. Details about Project Safe Childhood can be found at https://www.justice.gov/psc.
Following the sentencing, Clayton Spotted Calf was immediately taken into the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service. Ten years is a start, but the scars of this abuse will likely last a lifetime. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and hold those who prey on the vulnerable accountable for their actions.
