A Coatesville woman has been sentenced for her brazen scheme to defraud Comcast of nearly $125,000 from the company’s employee retirement accounts.
Laura Wayne, 38, was handed a 36-month prison term by U.S. District Court Judge Wendy Beetlestone after being found guilty of seven counts of wire fraud
According to prosecutors, Wayne used her position as an administrator of the employee retirement accounts at Comcast Corporation to create dummy accounts at Fidelity Company in the names of her family and relatives.
Wayne then used her access to Comcast records to fund the fake accounts for the maximum amount allowed by law and obtain matching funds from the company.
She then transferred the money in the dummy Fidelity accounts to her personal bank accounts using fake user names and passwords.
When caught, Wayne lied to both Comcast and an FBI agent, falsely claiming that she had paid the money back.
Wayne will also face three years of supervised release, restitution of $124,876, and a $700 special assessment as part of her sentence.
The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Laurie Magid.
The sentencing is a significant blow to Wayne, who had previously used her position of trust to carry out the brazen scheme.
The case serves as a reminder of the importance of accountability in the workplace and the need for companies to have robust measures in place to prevent such schemes from occurring.
