Robert Young, 50, of Worcester, is headed to federal prison for five years after being sentenced in a multi-drug trafficking conspiracy that flooded the streets with fentanyl, heroin, cocaine, and crack cocaine. The hammer came down yesterday when U.S. District Court Judge Timothy S. Hillman handed down the sentence, which includes three years of supervised release following incarceration.
Young pleaded guilty in October 2018 to one count of conspiracy to distribute heroin, cocaine, cocaine base, and fentanyl. The case traces back to April 2017, when law enforcement launched an investigation into drug sales orchestrated by Young and co-conspirator Daniel Donald on Groton Street in Worcester. What began as street-level surveillance quickly turned into a major narcotics bust.
On November 30, 2017, federal and local agents raided a property on Groton Street and uncovered a hidden compartment between the exterior and interior walls. Inside, they seized one kilogram of cocaine, 345 grams of heroin, over 80 grams of crack cocaine, approximately 200 fentanyl-laced pills, and a loaded 9 mm firearm. Both Young and Donald were arrested that day and have remained in custody ever since.
Donald’s fate took a steeper turn when, on October 29, 2021, a federal jury convicted him of possession with intent to distribute over 100 grams of heroin, 500 grams of cocaine, 28 grams of crack cocaine, and fentanyl, along with being a felon in possession of a firearm. His sentencing is scheduled for March 1, 2022, before Judge Hillman.
The operation was executed by a multi-agency task force under the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF), a federal initiative designed to dismantle the most dangerous drug and weapons trafficking networks. The OCDETF’s mission is clear: target, disrupt, and destroy the organizations driving the nation’s opioid and narcotics crisis.
Acting United States Attorney Nathaniel R. Mendell, DEA Boston Special Agent in Charge Brian D. Boyle, and Worcester Police Chief Stephen Sargent announced the sentencing. The investigation received critical support from the Norfolk County Sheriff’s Office and police departments in Westborough, Wellesley, Douglas, and Southbridge. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Greg A. Friedholm, Chief of Mendell’s Worcester Branch Office, and John Mulcahy prosecuted the case, underscoring the federal commitment to crushing drug networks in Central Massachusetts.
