Bribery Case Rocks New York Community
Wu Sue-Jen, the former first lady of Taiwan, is at the center of a bribery scandal that has left many in shock. According to the US government, Wu Sue-Jen orchestrated the movement of funds from Taiwan using shell companies and Swiss bank accounts controlled by her son and daughter-in-law.
As part of the scheme, Wu Sue-Jen allegedly accepted a bribe of 200 million New Taiwan dollars, approximately $6 million USD, from Yuanta Securities Co. Ltd. in 2005 and 2006. The bribe was paid to ensure that the authorities on Taiwan would not interfere with Yuanta’s acquisition of additional shares in Fuhwa Financial Holding Company Limited.
The US government has filed civil forfeiture complaints against properties in New York and Virginia that represent a portion of the bribe proceeds. The properties include a condominium in Manhattan and a house in Keswick, Va.
Chen Chih-Chung, Wu Sue-Jen’s son, and Huang Jui-Ching, his wife, were convicted in Taiwan in 2008 for their participation in the scheme. Chen Chih-Chung was sentenced to 14 months in prison, while Huang Jui-Ching was sentenced to 12 months. Both are currently under indictment in Taiwan on additional money laundering charges.
The former president of Taiwan and his wife, Wu Sue-Jen, were convicted in Taiwan on September 11, 2009, for bribery, embezzlement, and money laundering. They were sentenced to 20 years in prison and their convictions were upheld on appeal. The case is now pending before the Supreme Court in Taiwan.
The US Department of Justice and ICE worked closely with the Taiwan Supreme Prosecutors Office, Special Investigation Division to gather and exchange evidence regarding the money laundering that took place in this case. The investigation was conducted by the Foreign Corruption Investigations Group and the Asset Identification Unit.
