CLARKSBURG, WEST VIRGINIA – A Harrison County woman is facing serious federal charges after allegedly building a house of lies on top of falsified medical records. Christina Nolte, 42, of Bridgeport, West Virginia, stands accused of systematically defrauding both the Department of Veterans Affairs and the federal student loan system, raking in over $360,000 in ill-gotten gains.
The indictment, unsealed today, details a brazen scheme where Nolte allegedly fabricated medical documentation to falsely claim disability benefits from the VA. She wasn’t entitled to the money, but that didn’t stop her, according to federal prosecutors. The VA benefits became the foundation for an even bolder act of fraud – the unlawful discharge of $242,528 in federal student loan debt.
Nolte is now facing one count of theft of public money, property, or records; three counts of making false statements; and one count of student loan fraud. If convicted on all counts, she could spend a significant portion of her life behind bars. The theft charge alone carries a maximum sentence of up to 10 years in federal prison. Each false statement charge carries a potential five-year sentence, and the student loan fraud adds another five years to that tally.
