Yakama Man Convicted of Assault with a Deadly Weapon
A 43-year-old Yakama man has been convicted of a brazen daylight assault that left a victim with a serious head wound, federal prosecutors announced.
Joey Anthony Andy, 43, of Wapato, Washington, was found guilty of one count of Assault with a Dangerous Weapon after a jury delivered the verdict on May 15, 2024.
The assault occurred on April 4, 2023, outside the Noah’s Ark Homeless Shelter in Wapato. According to testimony, Andy confronted a victim, an enrolled member of the Yakama Nation, because he believed the victim had stolen his Bluetooth speaker. When the victim stepped back, Andy pulled out a knife and swung it at the victim’s head, causing a four-inch laceration that required 14 staples to close.
The victim ran back to the shelter where employees provided first aid and called the police. Officers later found Andy in the neighborhood and took him into custody after a short chase.
U.S. District Judge Mary K. Dimke presided over the trial, which began on May 13, 2024. Sentencing is set for September 17, 2024.
“Prosecuting violent crime occurring on Tribal land in the Eastern District of Washington is a major priority for the U.S. Attorney’s Office,” said U.S. Attorney Vanessa R. Waldref. “Mr. Andy carried out a violent attack in broad daylight that left his victim with a serious injury.”
“The sudden violence of this assault is alarming and demonstrates that prison is where Mr. Andy belongs,” said Richard A. Collodi, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Seattle field office. “Fortunately, the victim of this attack will recover.”
This case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Todd Swensen and Bree R. Black Horse.
