A Lower Brule man has been sentenced to 17 months of imprisonment for his role in a brutal assault.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, 24-year-old Irvin Yazzie was sentenced to 17 months of imprisonment, 18 months of supervised release, and a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund on August 5, 2013.
The conviction stems from an incident in which Yazzie and his girlfriend were arguing about their relationship at a residence in Lower Brule.
During the argument, Yazzie allegedly struck the victim with his fists and a black aluminum pole, causing bruising to her body.
The investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Meghan N. Dilges prosecuting the case.
Yazzie was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service after his sentencing.
The case against Yazzie began with an indictment by a federal grand jury on March 13, 2013. He pleaded guilty to the charge on April 30, 2013.
