Maurice Atkinson, a 30-year-old member of the York-based ‘Southside’ gang and affiliated with the ‘Bloods,’ was sentenced to life in prison on February 12, 2018, after stabbing a cooperating witness while awaiting sentencing. The attack occurred in Dauphin County Prison, where Atkinson and fellow gang members assaulted the informant in the shower, stabbing him repeatedly in the back. Video footage from prison surveillance confirmed the brutal assault, which stemmed from suspicions the inmate was helping law enforcement uncover drug smuggling operations inside the facility.
Atkinson’s sentence, handed down by United States District Court Judge Yvette Kane, marks the fourth life term imposed on a ‘Southside’ gang member in the sprawling federal racketeering and drug distribution conspiracy case. Prosecutors emphasized that Atkinson continued to engage in violent gang activity even while facing a near-certain life sentence. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania detailed how Atkinson remained loyal to the gang’s code, choosing violence over redemption despite the overwhelming evidence stacked against him.
During the sentencing hearing, Judge Kane reviewed a mountain of evidence from a seven-week trial that ended in November 2015, including videos of Atkinson participating in a violent melee against rival gang members from the ‘Parkway’ crew. In one recorded brawl, Atkinson was seen kicking, beating, and stomping a defenseless man. The trial featured over 100 witnesses — York police, FBI and ATF agents, and cooperating gang members — along with more than 500 exhibits, including seized drugs, cash, firearms, and incriminating videos.
The jury convicted Atkinson and 11 others on multiple charges. Seven, including Atkinson, were found guilty of racketeering conspiracy and drug trafficking conspiracy involving crack cocaine, cocaine, and in some cases heroin. Two defendants were acquitted of racketeering but convicted of drug conspiracy; three were cleared of both conspiracy counts. All 12 were convicted of drug possession with intent to distribute, and two, including Atkinson, were also found guilty of possessing firearms in furtherance of drug trafficking.
Judge Kane condemned the culture of violence perpetuated by the Southside gang, noting its trail of death — rival gang members, fellow associates, innocent bystanders, and children caught in the crossfire. She pointed out that prior state-level interventions had ‘failed’ to reform Atkinson. Even with a life sentence looming, he chose to escalate his criminal conduct, attacking a witness behind bars. ‘Very little to suggest that [Atkinson] would turn his back on this life,’ Kane stated, adding that his life sentence was ‘well-earned.’
The case was prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office as part of a broader federal crackdown on entrenched street gangs in Pennsylvania. Atkinson’s actions in prison underscore the persistent threat posed by organized street violence, even within the justice system’s confines. His life sentence sends a stark message: loyalty to a gang is no defense when the cost is human life and the integrity of federal justice.
