Anthony Johnson, 51, of York, Pennsylvania, was convicted May 16, 2019, after a two-day jury trial on charges of Hobbs Act robbery and discharging a firearm during a crime of violence, federal prosecutors announced. The verdict, delivered before Senior U.S. District Court Judge Sylvia H. Rambo in Harrisburg, caps a violent chapter that began with a brutal ambush on Girard Avenue in January 2016.
On January 9, 2016, Johnson and a co-conspirator robbed and shot their victim in the head during a planned attack, according to U.S. Attorney David J. Freed. The victim was left comatose for at least four months and underwent three brain surgeries and multiple life-saving interventions. The attack was not a random act but a calculated robbery that left permanent scars—physical and psychological.
Investigators recovered the weapon used in the shooting—a stolen Smith & Wesson 9mm semiautomatic pistol—from Johnson’s co-conspirator when she was arrested just four days after the attack, on January 13, 2016. Ballistics and testimony tied the firearm directly to the crime, strengthening the case against Johnson, who maintained his silence as the evidence mounted.
The conviction on the firearms charge alone triggers a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in federal prison, which must be served consecutively to any sentence imposed for the Hobbs Act robbery conviction. That means Johnson faces years behind bars before even beginning to serve time for the underlying robbery.
Prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys William A. Behe and Meredith A. Taylor, the case was built through a joint investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the York City Police Department. The collaboration underscored the federal commitment to targeting violent offenders under Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a nationwide initiative reinvigorated in 2017 to dismantle crime networks and protect high-risk communities.
Sentencing will be determined by Judge Rambo, who will weigh federal statutes, sentencing guidelines, and the severity of the crime. While the maximum penalty under federal law allows for a lifetime prison term, fines, and supervised release, the final sentence will reflect the defendant’s criminal history, the brutality of the offense, and the need for public protection. For now, Anthony Johnson awaits judgment in a case that shocked York and exposed the raw toll of street violence.
