A brutal attack on a jail guard has led to a 19-month prison sentence for Zachariah Nez, a 25-year-old from Sanostee, New Mexico.
According to court documents, Nez was initially sentenced to 72 months in prison in 2017 for voluntary manslaughter. After his release from prison, he was placed on three years of supervised release.
However, Nez’s supervised release was cut short when he was arrested on September 3, 2023, for violating the conditions of his release. While in custody at Core Civic in Cibola County, Nez punched a jail guard, who fortunately suffered no injuries.
The incident has sparked outrage in the community, with many calling for tougher penalties for those who assault law enforcement officials.
U.S. Attorney Alexander M.M. Uballez made the announcement today, stating that Nez will now face a 19-month prison sentence for his actions.
The United States Marshal Service investigated this case with assistance from Core Civic. Assistant United States Attorney Joseph M. Spindle is prosecuting the case.
Nez will be required to serve three years of supervised release after completing his term of imprisonment, a stark reminder of the consequences of violating the law.
