A Las Vegas man has been convicted of his role in a massive international counterfeiting scheme.
Zackary L. Ruiz, 19, also known as Mr. Mouse, pleaded guilty in federal court to charges of transferring counterfeit currency in the United States and overseas. He also admitted to conspiracy to make, deal, possess, pass, buy, sell, and transfer counterfeit currency.
Ruiz’s crimes were investigated by the United States Secret Service and led to his prosecution in federal court. He will be sentenced on April 18, 2016, at 9:30 a.m. before United States District Judge Mark Hornak.
Under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, Ruiz faces a total sentence of 45 years in prison, a fine of $750,000, or both. The actual sentence will depend on the seriousness of the offenses and Ruiz’s prior criminal history.
Ruiz was released on bond pending sentencing, and he will remain on bond until his sentencing hearing. Assistant United States Attorney Shardul S. Desai is prosecuting the case on behalf of the government.
The United States Secret Service conducted the investigation that led to Ruiz’s prosecution. The agency worked tirelessly to bring the counterfeiter to justice and prevent the circulation of counterfeit currency in the United States and abroad.
Ruiz’s conviction is a significant blow to the counterfeiting underworld and demonstrates the government’s commitment to protecting the integrity of our currency.
The case is a reminder that counterfeiting is a serious crime that can have devastating consequences for individuals and businesses.
