Zahid Maqsood, 56, Convicted of Obtaining Citizenship by Fraud in La Vista, Nebraska

A La Vista man has lost his citizenship after being convicted of obtaining it by fraud. Zahid Maqsood, 56, was sentenced to time served in jail and three years of supervised release by the Honorable Laurie Smith Camp.

Maqsood’s citizenship was also revoked as part of his sentence. The case was investigated by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Office of Removal Operations.

According to the investigation, Maqsood first came to the United States on a visa from Pakistan in 1990. He applied for asylum using a different name, but his application was denied and he was ordered removed from the country. He left the United States and returned in 2006 on an Immigrant Visa using the Maqsood name.

In 2012, Maqsood applied for naturalization, making a number of statements under oath. However, it was later discovered that these statements were false. As a result, his citizenship was granted using the name ‘Maqsood’.

Maqsood pleaded guilty to the offense on October 3, 2017. Upon conviction, federal law mandates the judge declare his citizenship void and his naturalization certificate cancelled.

Maqsood was in jail for approximately 8 months before being sentenced. He is now serving a three-year supervised release. His citizenship has been revoked, and his naturalization certificate has been cancelled.

The case is a reminder of the importance of honesty and integrity when applying for citizenship. It also highlights the consequences of fraud and deception in the immigration process.
