Zayveon Thomas, Attempted Carjacking, Illinois 2020

Beach Park, Illinois resident Zayveon Thomas, 19, has been charged with attempted carjacking in a federal court in Chicago following an alleged violent carjacking incident at a north suburban golf course last summer.

According to an indictment returned on Monday in U.S. District Court in Chicago, Thomas attempted to hijack a 2018 Lexus IS300 sedan from a victim in a parking lot of the golf course in Glencoe on July 2, 2020.

The indictment charges Thomas with one count of attempted carjacking, which is punishable by up to 15 years in federal prison.

Thomas is currently in law enforcement custody, and an arraignment in federal court in Chicago has not yet been scheduled.

The indictment was announced by John R. Lausch, Jr., United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois; and Emmerson Buie, Jr., Special Agent-in-Charge of the Chicago Field Office of the FBI. The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office provided valuable assistance.

The government is represented by Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Kelly.

The public is reminded that an indictment is not evidence of guilt. The defendant is presumed innocent and entitled to a fair trial at which the government has the burden of proving guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
