Crime Reporter – SHERMAN, Texas – A 39-year-old Zimbabwean conman named Moses Mukuka has been locked up for an all-time high of 46 months in federal prison for pulling off a $2.5 million tax refund scam through the IRS.
Mukuka, once living in Pocatello, Idaho, was handed down his sentence by U.S. District Judge Thad Heartfield on November 12, 2013. The swindler and his cronies set up two elaborate schemes: one involved placing flyers at Idaho State University posing as an accounting student, charging $10 for tax returns that were submitted with false data; the other was a sophisticated identity theft operation that siphoned millions in fraudulent refunds.
In the first scheme, Mukuka convinced unsuspecting students to hand over their tax paperwork, promising full refunds. He then forwarded this information to an outside party and pocketed a portion of the refunds, while failing to provide the completed returns. The court found him guilty of defrauding IRS out of $1.4 million in false claims.
The second conspiracy was more brazen; Mukuka and his gang obtained personal identification information and Electronic Filing Identification Numbers to file fraudulent refund claims, netting over $1 million before planning a loss of $1.7 million. Mukuka was ordered to pay a total restitution of $2.5 million.
The investigation that led to Mukuka’s downfall was spearheaded by the IRS Criminal Investigation team. Assistant U.S. Attorney Christopher Eason prosecuted the case in Texas after it was transferred from Idaho, where Mukuka was originally charged. The end of this saga marks a significant victory for justice and the integrity of our tax system.
Mukuka will be deported upon completion of his sentence, ensuring he won’t make his way back to American soil for more shenanigans. His case serves as a stark reminder of the lengths some will go to exploit the IRS and steal from hardworking taxpayers.
