Heath Meshell, 33, of Zwolle, La., stood before a federal magistrate Monday and admitted to trafficking methamphetamine and wielding firearms to protect his operation. The guilty plea, entered before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark L. Hornsby, marks a grim coda to a drug-fueled run that ended in a violent, evidence-laden raid on his home.
On April 12, 2016, federal agents stormed Meshell’s residence and unearthed a stash that reeked of organized drug dealing: more than 1,700 grams of methamphetamine, digital scales, prescription pills, and $1,585 in cash. Also found: a 9 mm rifle, a 9 mm pistol, a 410 shotgun, and multiple rounds of ammunition—tools of intimidation and defense in a trade built on fear.
Meshell pleaded guilty to one count of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine and one count of possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime. The plea, pending approval by U.S. District Judge Elizabeth E. Foote, seals his fate under federal sentencing guidelines that show no mercy for armed drug traffickers.
He now faces a mandatory minimum of 10 years and up to life in prison for the drug charge, plus a $10 million fine. For the firearm count, he faces not less than five years and a $250,000 fine—consecutive, not concurrent. On top of that, Meshell is staring down at least five years of supervised release and the total forfeiture of the seized weapons and cash.
The investigation was led by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), agencies that have intensified pressure on rural drug networks across Louisiana. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Brandon B. Brown, who called the findings ‘a textbook example of how drugs and guns fuel each other in communities already on the edge.’
Sentencing is scheduled for February 20, 2017. Until then, Heath Meshell remains in federal custody, a stark reminder that in the shadow economy of meth and bullets, the price of admission is often a lifetime behind bars.
