U.S. Attorney William J. Hochul, Jr. announced today that Michael Hernandez, 24, of Buffalo, New York, received a 57-month prison sentence for his involvement in the 10th Street Gang, a violent crime syndicate.
According to Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph M. Tripi, Hernandez was a key player in the gang’s operations between 2000 and 2010. He arranged the sale of a .38 caliber handgun and an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle between gang members, and conspired to distribute cocaine, crack cocaine, and other controlled substances on the West Side of Buffalo, New York.
As part of the RICO charge, Hernandez’s actions demonstrate the gang’s reckless disregard for public safety. The 10th Street Gang’s involvement in weapons trafficking and drug distribution has plagued the West Side of Buffalo for years.
The investigation, led by the FBI, New York State Police, and the Buffalo Police Department, has yielded significant results. The sentencing of Hernandez is a major blow to the 10th Street Gang’s operations.
U.S. District Judge Richard J. Arcara handed down the 57-month sentence, citing the severity of Hernandez’s crimes. The sentence is the culmination of an investigation that has been ongoing since 2000, and highlights the need for continued efforts to combat organized crime in Western New York.
The sentencing of Hernandez serves as a reminder that those involved in violent crime syndicates will be held accountable for their actions. The people of Buffalo deserve to live in a safe and secure community, free from the grip of organized crime.
