Clarence Courtney, Methamphetamine Distribution, California 2020

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Clarence Courtney, 58, of Vallejo, was sentenced to 16 years and three months in prison for distribution of methamphetamine and possession of a firearm by a felon, U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert announced.

The harsh sentence comes after a lengthy investigation by the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Vallejo Police Department, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and Homeland Security Investigations.

According to court documents, Courtney sourced 100% pure methamphetamine to co-defendant Michael Renay Williams, 62, of Vallejo, who then sold the methamphetamine to an undercover agent. The undercover operation led to the arrest of Courtney and Williams, who possessed more than 3 pounds of methamphetamine. In a shocking display of armament, law enforcement seized 200 rounds of ammunition, a Remington 12-gauge shotgun, and an AR-style sniper rifle with no serial number from Courtney’s residence.

Courtney’s possession of firearms is particularly egregious, given his four prior felony convictions. This makes him a prime example of a violent repeat offender, who should have been locked up years ago.

The operation that brought Courtney to justice was part of a larger effort called Operation PEACE, launched in Vallejo in August 2020. The initiative aimed to tackle the city’s rising homicide and shooting rates by targeting violent criminals and those involved in drug trafficking and firearms trafficking.

Co-defendant Williams, who pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute methamphetamine, is scheduled to be sentenced on June 20, 2024. The investigation is a prime example of the kind of collaborative law enforcement efforts needed to bring violent offenders to justice.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Cameron Desmond prosecuted the case, bringing the perpetrators to justice and ensuring that the streets of Vallejo are safer for its residents.

The operation’s success is a testament to the dedication of law enforcement agencies working together to take down violent criminals and dismantle their operations.
