Cory Austin Hamond Pleads Guilty to Methamphetamine Conspiracy in Virginia
In a devastating blow to Southwest Virginia’s fight against drug trafficking, Cory Austin Hamond, 23, has pleaded guilty to conspiring with others to traffic methamphetamine from Georgia into Lee and Wise counties for further distribution.
According to court documents, Hamond purchased significant quantities of methamphetamine from co-defendant Daniel Rowland and other sources in Georgia. He then transported the drugs into Lee and Wise County for redistribution. Hamond admitted to purchasing more than 500 grams of methamphetamine between July 1, 2019 and December 31, 2020.
Hammond pleaded guilty to one count of conspiring to distribute and possess with the intent to distribute 500 grams or more of methamphetamine and one count of distributing methamphetamine. He is scheduled to be sentenced on September 29, 2021 and faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in prison and a maximum penalty of life in prison. A federal district court judge will determine any sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.
The investigation into Hamond’s activities was led by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Southwest Virginia Drug Task Force.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Lena Busscher is tasked with prosecuting the case.
Hammond’s guilty plea is a significant victory for law enforcement in the region. His actions have had devastating consequences for the communities he was trafficking in, and his punishment will serve as a deterrent to others who would seek to follow in his footsteps.
Hamond, a resident of Wise County, Virginia, will now face the consequences of his actions. His plea is a reminder that those who engage in drug trafficking will be caught and punished.
