Tyree Irving, a 29-year-old from Washington, D.C., walked up to a group of men outside the Tyler House on North Capitol Street, NW, on January 15, 2019, and opened fire, killing Davane Williams. Irving, who was armed with a .40 caliber pistol, yelled at Williams for less than 10 seconds before shooting him five times. The motive behind the killing is not clear. Irving fled the scene, changing clothes before abandoning the area.

Irving’s actions that day were swift and deadly. After shooting Williams, he put the pistol away and ran southbound, crossing M Street. He was eventually caught on February 27, 2019, and has been in custody since. On February 2, 2026, Irving pleaded guilty to one count of second-degree murder while armed.

The case was investigated by the Metropolitan Police Department, with assistance from the US Attorney’s office. Irving was sentenced to 18 years in prison, followed by five years of supervised release, by the Honorable Judge Neil Kravitz on July 24, 2026.

The US Attorney’s office commended the work of the Metropolitan Police Department and the prosecutors who worked on the case, including Assistant US Attorneys Joshua Hall and Wes Faulkner. Interim Chief Jeffery W. Carroll of the Metropolitan Police Department joined the US Attorney in announcing the sentence.
