Twenty-one defendants in St. Louis have been hit with federal drug trafficking charges in the latest wave of Operation Legend arrests, part of a sweeping federal crackdown on violent crime that has already netted more than 1,000 arrests nationwide. The charges, announced by Attorney General William P. Barr and U.S. Attorney Jeff Jensen at a press conference in Kansas City, Missouri, underscore the federal government’s aggressive push into cities ravaged by gun violence and narcotics.
Since its launch on July 8, 2020, Operation Legend has led to approximately 217 federal arrests across participating cities, excluding Indianapolis, which joined the initiative on August 14, 2020. In St. Louis alone, 25 individuals have been charged with federal crimes. Alongside the 21 drug traffickers, one defendant faces charges for being a felon in possession of a firearm, another for possession of a firearm by a drug user, and two others for violent federal offenses tied to robberies and drug-related shootings.
The operation was triggered by the tragic death of four-year-old LeGend Taliferro, shot and killed in his sleep on June 29 in Kansas City. In response, federal agencies including the FBI, DEA, ATF, U.S. Marshals Service, Department of Homeland Security, and Missouri State Highway Patrol have flooded St. Louis, working side-by-side with the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department to dismantle criminal networks feeding the city’s surge in homicides.
One high-profile arrest followed an undercover joint operation by ATF and SLMPD targeting a known shooter, resulting in federal charges for robbery of an item affecting interstate commerce and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence. Another came after the U.S. Marshals executed a state arrest warrant, leading to charges of drug trafficking and firearm possession in connection with drug crimes.
Federal search warrants have been a key tool. In one case, ATF agents raided the residence of a suspected murderer, recovering weapons and evidence that led to a felon-in-possession charge. The operation has seized nearly 400 firearms across all jurisdictions—a grim testament to the firepower saturating these urban zones.
“Operation LeGend – Saint Louis represents a unique federal partnership with local law enforcement to address the increase in homicides and violent crime in Saint Louis in 2020,” said U.S. Attorney Jeff Jensen. “Today’s announcement highlights the impactful work the brave men and women of the Saint Louis Metropolitan Police Department, Department of Homeland Security, FBI, DEA, ATF, the U.S. Marshals Service and Missouri State Highway Patrol have accomplished in Operation LeGend’s early stages. Of course, there is more important work to be done.”
