A California man has been sentenced to 11 ½ years for his role in a California-to-Maine drug trafficking operation.
BANGOR, Maine – Alex Hanna, 31, was sentenced to 138 months in prison to be followed by five years of supervised release on May 7, 2024.
Hanna, a resident of California, pleaded guilty on March 14, 2024, to conspiring to distribute methamphetamine and money laundering.
According to court records, between May 2022 and March 2023, Hanna and others trafficked methamphetamine in Downeast Maine, receiving the drugs by mail from a source in California.
Hanna coordinated drug shipments from the source and found coconspirators in Maine willing to receive the packages. He also sent the sales proceeds to the source via Walmart2Walmart, Cash App and Venmo, using coconspirators’ identifications and accounts to conceal his involvement in the transactions.
The FBI investigated the case with assistance from the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, Ellsworth Police Department, Maine Drug Enforcement Agency, Holden Police Department, and Hancock County Sheriff’s Office.
Hanna’s scheme netted significant profits, but the exact dollar amount is not specified in the court records. The sentence handed down by U.S. District Judge Stacey D. Neumann will put an end to Hanna’s involvement in the illicit trade, at least for the next 11 ½ years.
