$3.5 Million Heist: Miami Beach Stolen Funds Used for NFL Tickets
A 45-year-old New York resident, David J. Miller, was sentenced to 124 months in prison for stealing over $3.5 million from the City of Miami Beach’s bank account through unauthorized electronic transfers.
Miller, of Syracuse, New York, used the stolen funds to purchase approximately 157 seat licenses at NFL stadiums around the country, as well as season and individual game tickets at NFL games and other sporting events.
At sentencing, United States District Judge Federico A. Moreno ordered Miller to pay $1,563,187 in restitution to the victims of the offense, including the City of Miami Beach. Miller will serve a five-year term of supervised release at the conclusion of his prison sentence.
Miller previously pled guilty to bank fraud, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 1344(2), and aggravated identity theft, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 1028A(a)(1).
U.S. Attorney Benjamin G. Greenberg commended the investigative efforts of the FBI and the City of Miami Beach Police Department, which worked together to bring Miller to justice.
This case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Christopher B. Browne, Harold E. Schimkat, and Nalina Sombuntham.
