Amanda Ruth Schweitzer, Child Enticement, Missouri 2017

Joplin, Mo. – The grimy halls of justice were shaken yesterday as former North Middle School teacher Amanda Ruth Schweitzer faced the music for her despicable deeds. The 42-year-old educator was sentenced to 20 years behind bars without parole by U.S. District Judge Roseann Ketchmark.

Schweitzer, who admitted to enticing a 13-year-old student for illegal sexual activity on at least two occasions in March 2017, was also ordered to serve 15 years of supervised release following her prison term.

The offending communication between the predator and her young victim primarily occurred via Instagram. It was there that Schweitzer, who was employed by the Joplin school system at the time of the offense, sent explicit photos to the child and engaged in sexual intercourse with him.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Ami Harshad Miller prosecuted this horrifying case, which was investigated by the Southwest Missouri Cyber Crimes Task Force, the Joplin Police Department, and the FBI. It has been brought under the auspices of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative aimed at protecting children from sexual exploitation and abuse.

Launched in 2006 by the Department of Justice, Project Safe Childhood leverages federal, state, and local resources to apprehend and prosecute those who prey on minors. For more information on this crucial initiative, visit www.usdoj.gov/psc.

As this case highlights, the fight against child sexual exploitation is a relentless one, requiring vigilance from all corners of society. If you suspect any form of child abuse or exploitation, please report it immediately to authorities.
