ALBANY, NEW YORK – In a stark reminder of the government’s commitment to border security and labor law enforcement, federal agents have detained 57 individuals found unlawfully present in Cayuga County during a significant worksite operation on September 4. Five defendants have been criminally charged for illegal reentry into the United States following prior removal—a serious felony that poses a threat to our national security and community safety.
These charges are no joke, as they represent a direct challenge to the rule of law. The U.S. Attorney emphasized that each defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty, but the very act of illegal reentry is a flagrant violation that cannot be tolerated.
The primary focus of last week’s operation was to enforce immigration laws, ensuring that hardworking Americans have access to well-paying jobs in their communities. While the specific employer involved in the operation remains unnamed, the Attorney made it clear that employers who hire unauthorized workers are breaking the law and undermining both our economy and public safety.
Employers across the Northern District of New York were given a stern warning: comply with immigration laws or face aggressive prosecution. The days of turning a blind eye to illegal hiring practices are over, as the government is committed to holding violators accountable.
The U.S. Attorney also acknowledged the valuable contributions of lawful immigrants but stressed that illegal reentry after deportation and the greed of employers who hire unauthorized workers are unacceptable. Federal law enforcement agencies will continue to work together to identify violators and ensure they face the consequences of their actions.
Look for federal agents at more worksites in the future as the government fulfills its duty to enforce immigration laws fairly, firmly, and without exception. This operation is a wake-up call for all who think they can bypass the law when it comes to hiring and employing unauthorized workers.
