PORTLAND, MAINE — In a stunning turn of events, 61-year-old Kathy Jordan from Westbrook, Maine, has pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court to adulterating a dietary supplement with intent to defraud.
Jordan, a resident of the coastal city, is accused of purchasing a bottle of fish oil capsules from a local pharmacy on April 3, 2012. The following day, she returned all three items — the fish oil capsules, face cream, and shampoo — for a full refund. One week later, the unsuspecting customer who purchased the fish oil capsules discovered a sinister secret: the bottle contained more than just fish oil. It also included stool softener capsules and Dilantin, a prescription anti-seizure medication.
Upon further investigation by the pharmacy, it was revealed that Jordan had replaced some of the fish oil with these unauthorized substances in an attempt to dupe the store into providing her with a refund. According to court documents, Jordan confessed to investigators about her fraudulent scheme.
The repercussions for this deceitful act are severe. If convicted, Jordan faces up to three years in federal prison and a $250,000 fine. Her sentencing will be determined after a pre-sentence investigation report is completed by the U.S. Probation Office.
This case has been meticulously investigated by the Food and Drug Administration’s Office of Inspector General, highlighting the agency’s ongoing efforts to protect consumers from fraudulent and dangerous dietary supplements.
United States Attorney Thomas E. Delahanty II emphasized the seriousness of Jordan’s crime, stating that such actions undermine public trust and can have serious health consequences for unsuspecting buyers. The Assistant United States Attorney handling the case is James W. Chapman, Jr., who can be reached at (207) 780-3257.
