Gunfire hasn’t slowed in the Twin Cities, but the feds are hitting back hard. In the last 30 days, 94 illegal firearms have been ripped from the streets as part of a no-warning push by the Twin Cities Violent Crime Task Force, a federal crackdown launched to stem an unrelenting tide of shootings and violent crime.
U.S. Attorney Erica H. MacDonald announced the task force’s creation on July 8, 2020, as homicides and armed assaults spiked across Minneapolis and St. Paul. The initiative pooled federal, state, and local law enforcement to target repeat offenders, illegal gun traffickers, and those committing violent acts with firearms. The results so far: 15 individuals charged with federal firearms violations, each facing steep penalties under U.S. law.
The operation isn’t a show of force for headlines—it’s a sustained combat mission against chaos. Agents from the FBI, ATF, U.S. Marshals, and local police have conducted raids, executed search warrants, and followed gun traces to disrupt supply chains feeding the city’s underground weapon markets. Every firearm seized is one fewer on corners where kids walk to school.
MacDonald confirmed the task force will remain active for another 30 days, citing ongoing threats and the need to maintain pressure. A centralized command center continues to coordinate intelligence, surveillance, and rapid response operations. Officials stress the extension is not automatic—each phase will be evaluated for impact, efficiency, and necessity.
The public is being urged to act as eyes and ears. Tips can be called in to 1-800-CALLFBI (800-225-5324), or digital evidence like photos and videos can be uploaded directly at www.fbi.gov/violence. Authorities say anonymous tips have already led to arrests and are critical to disrupting planned violence.
This isn’t community policing. This is federal intervention in a city under siege. For now, the guns are being counted, the cases are stacking up, and the message is clear: pull the trigger illegally, and the full weight of the U.S. justice system will come down hard.
