946 individuals were charged in March with illegal reentry after deportation, according to the United States Attorney’s Office District of Arizona. This marks a significant increase in illegal reentry cases, with many of those charged having prior convictions for non-immigration crimes.
A total of 359 of those charged had previously been convicted of non-immigration criminal offenses in the U.S. This includes violent crime convictions, property crime convictions, DUI convictions, and drug crime convictions. Of the 359 individuals with non-immigration criminal records:
• 74 had violent crime convictions, including 2 individuals with homicide convictions, 9 individuals with sex offense convictions, and 24 individuals with domestic violence convictions.
• 52 had property crime convictions.
• 98 had DUI convictions.
• 132 had drug crime convictions.
Additionally, 264 of those charged had been deported three or more times, highlighting the recurring nature of this crime. The numbers represent United States Attorney’s Office prosecutions only and do not include individuals apprehended by immigration enforcement officials and subjected solely to administrative process.
The recent policy change by the Department of Homeland Security to expeditiously return aliens who illegally enter the United States may have contributed to the increase in illegal reentry cases. The U.S. Attorney’s Office is committed to holding accountable those who engage in this crime.
