Sex Trafficking Convictions Land Sioux Falls Man 3 Life Terms
A 37-year-old Sioux Falls man, Carl Campbell, has been sentenced to three life terms in prison for sex trafficking by force, fraud, or coercion, and the sex trafficking of a child. The sentences will run concurrently with a 20-year sentence for using interstate transportation for prostitution and obstruction of sex trafficking enforcement.
Court documents show that Campbell was convicted by a federal jury on February 8, 2013, after being indicted by a second superseding indictment on November 6, 2012.
According to prosecutors, Campbell lured young adults and minors into commercial sex acts, with one victim being repeatedly assaulted over an 8-month period. The assaults forced the victim to perform commercial sex acts in South Dakota, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Illinois.
U.S. Attorney Brendan V. Johnson praised the law enforcement agencies involved in the investigation, which included Homeland Security Investigations, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation, and others. Johnson vowed to aggressively prosecute those who traffic children and young women.
Campbell was ordered to pay a $500 assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. He was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshal following the sentencing.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Kevin Koliner and Jeffrey Clapper.
U.S. Attorney Johnson’s statement emphasized the commitment to protecting vulnerable citizens from those who seek to exploit them. The sentence handed down to Campbell sends a clear message that such crimes will not be tolerated.
