Assault Charge in South Dakota

A 32-year-old man from Eagle Butte, South Dakota, has been indicted for Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury, according to a recent indictment by a federal grand jury.

Stanley Morrison, age 32, appeared before US Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno on May 23, 2013, and pled not guilty to the indictment. The maximum penalty upon conviction is 10 years in custody, a $250,000, or both.

The charge relates to an alleged incident that occurred in January of 2013 in which Morrison is accused of assaulting a Cherry Creek man and that the assault resulted in serious injury to the victim. The charge is merely an accusation, and Morrison is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

The investigation is being conducted by the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Division. Assistant US Attorney Mikal Hanson is prosecuting the case.

Morrison was released on bond pending trial. A trial date has not yet been set.

A United States Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced the indictment, stating that the case would be vigorously prosecuted. The indictment highlights the severity of the alleged assault and the potential consequences for Morrison if convicted.

The case serves as a reminder that violent crimes will not be tolerated in South Dakota and that those responsible will be held accountable for their actions.
