A violent altercation in Eagle Butte, South Dakota, left a man battered and bruised, and on October 4, 2021, the perpetrator was brought to justice. Vincent Chasing Hawk, a 40-year-old resident of Wahpeton, North Dakota, was sentenced to 48 months in federal prison for Assault with a Dangerous Weapon.

According to the investigation, on September 5, 2020, Chasing Hawk and the victim had been drinking at an unknown location in Eagle Butte. Unprovoked, Chasing Hawk stood up and started punching the victim. The assault continued unabated, with Chasing Hawk punching the victim approximately 30 times.

During the assault, the victim fell onto the floor, and Chasing Hawk took advantage of the situation to stomp on the victim. In a shocking display of brutality, Chasing Hawk then knocked a clothes iron off a table and used it to hit the victim at least four times.

The incident was reported to the authorities, and an investigation was launched by the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jay Miller prosecuted the case.
