Huron Man Charged with Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person

A 23-year-old Huron man has been charged with Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person, a federal crime punishable by up to 10 years in federal prison and/or a $250,000 fine, three years of supervised release, and $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

On November 12, 2020, Yeh Thwin, a resident of Huron, South Dakota, knowingly possessed a Glock GmbH, Model 22C Gen 3, .40 Smith and Wesson caliber, semi-automatic pistol, which had been shipped and transported in interstate and foreign commerce. Thwin had previously been convicted of a crime punishable by imprisonment for a term exceeding one year.

Thwin was indicted on April 6, 2021, and appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Veronica L. Duffy on July 28, 2021, where he pled not guilty to the Indictment. Thwin was released on bond pending trial, which has been set for October 5, 2021.

The investigation into this case is being conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeffrey C. Clapper is prosecuting the case.

Thwin’s status in the case is currently pending trial. The maximum penalty for this crime is up to 10 years in federal prison and/or a $250,000 fine, three years of supervised release, and $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Restitution may also be ordered.
