A Sioux Falls woman is headed to federal prison for possessing a firearm she was legally barred from carrying.
On April 22, 2024, U.S. District Judge Karen E. Schreier sentenced Christina Gonzalez, 34, to one year and eight months in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release. The federal prison sentence will be served under Project Safe Neighborhoods, a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence.
Gonzalez was convicted of Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person, a crime she was indicted for by a federal grand jury in December of 2023. She pleaded guilty to the charge on February 6, 2024.
The case began on October 20, 2023, when law enforcement responded to a call of a suspicious person trespassing on private property. A witness reported seeing a woman with a handgun, and Gonzalez was subsequently arrested after a search of her vehicle yielded the firearm.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Paige Petersen prosecuted the case, which was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Sioux Falls Police Department. Gonzalez was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service to continue serving her sentence.
Gonzalez must also pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. The PSN program, launched in 2021, aims to strengthen community-based prevention efforts and set focused enforcement priorities to reduce violent crime and gun violence.
