GUN CRIME: Sioux Falls Woman Handed 20-Month Prison Term for Possession of Firearm by a Prohibited Person.
U.S. District Judge Karen E. Schreier delivered the harsh verdict to 34-year-old Christina Gonzalez in a Sioux Falls, South Dakota, courtroom on April 22, 2024. This punishment stems from Gonzalez’s conviction for violating federal law by possessing a firearm as a prohibited person.
The consequences of Gonzalez’s actions were laid out in stark detail during the sentencing. Following her one-year-and-eight-month prison term, she will be subject to three years of supervised release. A mandatory $100 special assessment will be levied against her to compensate the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
Gonzalez’s ordeal began on October 20, 2023, when law enforcement responded to a suspicious person trespassing on private property. A witness reported seeing a female with a handgun in her possession. When authorities arrived, they found Gonzalez near her vehicle and subsequently discovered the handgun.
Gonzalez’s guilty plea on February 6, 2024, sealed her fate. Her case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a collaborative effort involving law enforcement and community organizations aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Paige Petersen prosecuted the case, while the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Sioux Falls Police Department led the investigation. Gonzalez was remanded to the U.S. Marshals Service to begin serving her sentence.
