Sioux Falls Man Sentenced to Federal Prison for Receiving a Gun While Under Indictment

In a move to crack down on gun violence, a Sioux Falls man has been sentenced to 2 years and 3 months in federal prison for receiving a firearm while under indictment.

According to a statement from the Department of Justice, Lucas Ewald Ahrendt, 32, of Sioux Falls, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Karen E. Schreier on April 16, 2024, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Ahrendt was convicted of Illegal Receipt of a Firearm by a Person Under Indictment and was also ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

The charges stem from an incident on December 26, 2022, when a passerby witnessed Ahrendt waving a handgun around in the front passenger seat of a truck in the West 57th area of Sioux Falls. The passerby reported the incident to law enforcement, who located a loaded Glock handgun, marijuana, and fentanyl in the vehicle.

Ahrendt was prohibited from possessing firearms because he was under indictment for a felony, Possession of a Controlled Substance in Moody County, South Dakota, when he received the firearm.

This case was investigated by Homeland Security Investigations and the Sioux Falls Police Department, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Elizabeth Ebert prosecuting the case.

The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence by bringing together law enforcement and the communities they serve.

Ahrendt was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service to continue serving his sentence. This case serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of reckless behavior and the importance of community-based initiatives in preventing violence.
