A 60-year-old Sioux Falls man faces federal charges after violently seizing a motor vehicle from a victim who suffered serious bodily injury during the attack. Jon Henri Bryant, Sr. was indicted by a federal grand jury on November 9, 2016, on a single count of carjacking, marking the latest escalation in a case that stunned local residents.
Bryant appeared in federal court on November 22, 2016, before U.S. Magistrate Judge Veronica Duffy, where he formally entered a plea of not guilty. The hearing confirmed the federal nature of the prosecution, with authorities treating the incident as a violent federal offense due to the severity of the assault and the crossing of jurisdictional thresholds.
According to the indictment, on October 25, 2016, Bryant forcibly took control of a motor vehicle from the victim through violence and with the clear intent to cause death or serious bodily harm. The attack left the victim with injuries classified as serious under federal law, amplifying the potential penalties Bryant could face if convicted.
Under federal sentencing guidelines, the maximum penalty for the charge is up to 25 years in federal prison and/or a $250,000 fine. Additional consequences include up to 5 years of supervised release following incarceration, a mandatory $100 payment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund, and potential court-ordered restitution to the victim.
The investigation has been a joint effort among multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office, the Sioux Falls Police Department, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the U.S. Marshal’s Service. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeremy R. Jehangiri, who is pursuing the charge in federal district court.
Bryant remains in the custody of the State of South Dakota pending trial, with no trial date yet scheduled. The indictment is presumed factual only for the purposes of prosecution; Bryant is innocent until proven guilty under federal law. The case continues to unfold amid growing public scrutiny over violent crime in the region.
