Capitol Waste Inc. of Sacramento, Calif., is facing a federal court order to pay up—or else!
The Justice Department has been after Capitol Waste and its owners, Iva and Kenneth Whitmire, for failing to meet their tax obligations since the year 2000.
Court records show that Capitol Waste owes nearly $2.6 million in federal employment and unemployment taxes alone. The Whitmires haven’t been any better on their individual income tax duties.
The court has given them a deadline: file all back taxes within 90 days, or face serious penalties. This is just the latest chapter in the Justice Department’s battle against tax dodgers.
Assistant Attorney General Nathan J. Hochman warned that failing to comply with federal employment tax laws can lead to criminal prosecution and significant fines. ‘Employers who harm their employees by not paying taxes are also harming the United States,’ he said.
