The Crossings at Summerland Apartments in Woodbridge, Va., is facing a substantial fine after the Justice Department alleged that developers violated the federal Fair Housing Act.
Developers failed to ensure public and common use areas were accessible to individuals with disabilities, as required by law. The Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division has been steadfast in enforcing fair housing rights for persons with disabilities.
The settlement includes a $30,000 fund for victims of the inaccessible housing, along with a $20,000 civil penalty and mandatory training on the Fair Housing Act. The case underscores the department’s dedication to eliminating housing discrimination.
Defendants Summerland Heights III LP and others must now make immediate improvements to comply with accessibility standards or face further legal action from the Justice Department.
