Tony F. Mack, Extortion and Bribery, New Jersey 2014

Trenton Mayor Tony F. Mack has been sentenced to 58 months in prison after being convicted of extortion and bribery charges. The conviction stems from a scheme to accept $119,000 in bribes in exchange for Mack’s official actions and influence in assisting cooperating witnesses in the development of an automated parking garage on City-owned land.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Mack, 48, and his brother Ralphiel Mack, 41, both of Trenton, were charged in connection with the scheme in September 2012. The indictment added charges against all three defendants in December 2012.

The Macks were convicted of conspiracy to obstruct and affect interstate commerce by extortion under color of official right, attempted obstruction of commerce by extortion under the color of official right, accepting and agreeing to accept bribes, two counts of wire fraud, mail fraud, and conspiracy to obstruct commerce by extortion under color of official right.

Tony Mack was sentenced to 58 months in prison, while his brother Ralphiel Mack was sentenced to 30 months. The sentences were imposed by U.S. District Judge Michael A. Shipp in Trenton federal court.

The scheme involved a plan to divert $100,000 of the purchase amount that a cooperating witness had indicated a willingness to pay to the City of Trenton to the Macks. The bribe payments were associated with inside deals to give away the city’s property.

The FBI and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Jersey investigated the case, which was prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
