Bridgeport Man Sentenced for Illegal Gun Possession

CHARLES YOUNG, 30, of Bridgeport, was sentenced to 50 months of imprisonment, followed by three years of supervised release, for illegally possessing a firearm, according to Deirdre M. Daly, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut.

On February 25, 2015, YOUNG was arrested after engaging law enforcement officers in a high-speed car chase that began in Bridgeport’s east end and ended in Fairfield. During the chase, a witness saw YOUNG throw something from his car, which was later found to be a loaded Glock 22 .40 caliber firearm.

At the time of his arrest, YOUNG was on state probation for his 2010 conviction on criminal possession of a firearm and possession of a weapon in a motor vehicle. He was later found to have violated his probation and sentenced to five years of imprisonment.

YOUNG has been detained since his arrest and pleaded guilty in federal court to one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon on January 22, 2016. His federal sentence was ordered to run concurrently with his state sentence.

The matter was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Connecticut State Police’s Statewide Urban Violence Cooperative Crime Control Task Force, Bridgeport Police Department, and Fairfield Police Department. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Brian Leaming and David Nelson.

U.S. District Judge Michael P. Shea handed down the sentence in Hartford. YOUNG’s federal sentence will run concurrently with the five-year state sentence he received in 2015.

The investigation and prosecution of this case highlight the ongoing efforts of law enforcement agencies to combat gun violence and hold those responsible accountable for their actions.

YOUNG’s sentencing is a significant step towards ensuring public safety and preventing further gun-related crimes in the community.
