New Haven Man Charged with Illegal Gun Possession

A New Haven man has been indicted on charges of illegal gun possession after a federal grand jury alleged he had a firearm in his possession on May 26, 2015.

James Douglas, 23, also known as ‘Sucky,’ is accused of violating federal law by possessing a .32 caliber Smith & Wesson revolver, which has moved in interstate or foreign commerce, despite his prior felony convictions.

Douglas has been in state custody since his arrest on the same day the incident allegedly occurred, May 26, 2015. If convicted, he faces a maximum 10-year prison sentence and a fine of up to $250,000.

U.S. Attorney Deirdre M. Daly emphasized that Douglas is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

The case is being investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the New Haven Police Department, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Jennifer Laraia serving as the lead prosecutor.

Douglas’s indictment marks the latest development in a long string of charges related to gun crimes in Connecticut.
