Koffi Roudolphe Sewoul, a 40-year-old citizen of Togo, has been found guilty of a serious crime that undermines national security: passport misuse.
According to sources, Sewoul, who resides in Lome, Togo, attempted to enter the United States through the Champlain Port of Entry on October 15, 2016, using his brother’s United States passport.
This brazen act of deception was not an isolated incident, as Sewoul had previously used the passport to travel from Togo to Accra, Ghana, on October 12, 2016, and then from Ghana to Montreal, Quebec, on October 13, 2016.
The investigation, led by United States Customs and Border Protection, revealed a disturbing pattern of behavior that raises questions about Sewoul’s intentions and trustworthiness.
As a result of his conviction, Sewoul faces up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000 when he is sentenced by U.S. Senior District Judge Lawrence E. Kahn.
The case has been investigated by United States Customs and Border Protection and is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Douglas Collyer, who has demonstrated a commitment to upholding the law and holding individuals accountable for their actions.
The sentence handed down to Sewoul will serve as a warning to others who would seek to exploit the trust placed in them by the U.S. government.
