James Prevails in Legal Battle Against Trump’s Global Tariffs

New York Attorney General Letitia James has secured a decisive legal victory against the Trump administration’s imposition of worldwide tariffs. The United States Court of International Trade ruled that President Trump’s tariffs, imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), are invalid and cannot be enforced.

The court decision was in favor of Attorney General James and a coalition of 11 other state attorneys general who sued the administration for violating the law. The lawsuit alleged that the tariffs were an illegal tax hike on American businesses and working families, threatening economic stability across the nation.

Attorney General James emphasized the importance of the ruling: ‘The law is clear: no president has the power to raise taxes at will. These tariffs would have caused significant inflation, damaged businesses of all sizes, and led to job losses if they had been allowed to continue.’

The lawsuit accused the Trump administration of imposing tariffs through executive orders, social media posts, and agency directives, claiming that the president overstepped his authority under IEEPA. Despite this, President Trump continued to impose sweeping tariffs against numerous countries, including China, Mexico, Canada, and the European Union.

The court’s ruling found all tariffs imposed by the Trump administration under IEEPA to be unlawful, ordering their permanent blocking. Joining Attorney General James in the lawsuit were attorneys general from Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Maine, Minnesota, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, and Vermont.

This legal victory represents a significant milestone in the fight against arbitrary economic policies that threaten American jobs and the national economy.
