New York – In a dramatic stand against the Trump administration, New York Attorney General Letitia James has co-led a coalition of 15 state attorneys general in filing a lawsuit aimed at halting illegal moves to slash National Science Foundation (NSF) programs.
This action follows the NSF’s abrupt termination of projects designed to boost women, minorities, and people with disabilities’ participation in STEM fields. The administration also set an arbitrary cap on research project indirect costs, threatening millions in vital funding.
‘Every time we go online, scan a barcode at checkout, or get an MRI, we use technology made possible by the NSF,’ AG James stated. ‘This administration’s attacks on basic science and essential diversity efforts will weaken our economy and national security.’
The NSF has historically been instrumental in maintaining America’s lead in STEM fields, from AI tech to environmental solutions. The agency has a legal focus on improving diversity in STEM, which has seen significant progress since 1995.
NSF’s termination of diversity programs resulted in the cancellation of $11 million in CUNY projects. The lawsuit also argues that capping indirect costs would devastate university research, impacting key projects at SUNY campuses.
Attorney General James and the coalition are seeking a court order to block NSF’s new directives, aiming to preserve critical scientific research and education.
