Travis Lokey, a 32-year-old Columbus, Georgia resident, was handed down a 17.5-year sentence on May 30, 2013, for his role in the distribution of crack cocaine and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
The Honorable Clay D. Land, District Judge for the Middle District of Georgia, imposed the stiff penalty after Lokey pleaded guilty to distributing over 28 grams of crack on May 10, 2011, to an undercover source working with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the Muscogee County Sheriff’s Office.
Lokey’s crime spree didn’t end there. On October 27, 2011, he was stopped for speeding and found in possession of a Charter Arms model Undercover .38 Special revolver, hidden in his pants pocket. His prior convictions meant Lokey faced mandatory minimum sentences under the Armed Career Criminal Act of 1984, which stipulates a mandatory minimum of 15 years to life for individuals with three prior convictions for drug trafficking or violent crimes.
“When repeat offenders are taken off the streets it is a win for us all,” said U.S. Attorney Michael Moore, who hailed Lokey’s sentence as a victory for the citizens of Columbus.
The investigation into Lokey was a collaborative effort by the DEA, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms, and the Muscogee County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant United States Attorney Crawford Seals prosecuted the case.
