Shocking revelations in the grim Philadelphia drug scene as Dr. William J. O’Brien III faces an additional 23 counts of illegal drug distribution. The 49-year-old physician is accused of running a pill mill, where he sold dangerous controlled substances like oxycodone and methadone to patients for cash, without any medical examination or treatment.
The Superseding Indictment against O’Brien reveals that his ‘Apatients’ paid up to $250 for the first prescription appointment and $200 for refills. United States Attorney Zane David Memeger announced the charges, emphasizing that O’Brien’s actions were outside of professional practice and for no legitimate medical purpose.
Today’s charges bring the total to 49 counts against O’Brien, who was initially indicted on January 29, 2015, alongside Angela Rongione for conspiracy to distribute controlled substances. He was also separately charged with 26 counts of distributing oxycodone and Xanax, selling prescriptions to a government cooperator and an undercover FBI agent.
Should O’Brien be convicted, he and Rongione could face substantial prison terms and fines, along with criminal forfeiture proceedings. The investigation was led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, FDA Office of Criminal Investigations, and the Department of Health and Human Services – Office of the Inspector General, with Assistant United States Attorney M. Beth Leahy handling the prosecution.
This case highlights the ongoing battle against drug trafficking and pill mills across the nation, as law enforcement agencies strive to protect communities from such dangerous activities.
