CLEVELAND, OH – Charles McMillian, 46, of Cleveland, is facing federal charges after allegedly failing to comply with legally mandated sex offender registration requirements. The indictment, handed down today by a federal grand jury, accuses McMillian of violating the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA).
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Ohio, McMillian is accused of both failing to register as a sex offender and failing to update his registration as required by law. The specifics of the original offense that triggered the registration requirements were not immediately released.
The investigation into McMillian’s alleged non-compliance was conducted by the United States Marshals Service in Cleveland. These agents reportedly developed evidence suggesting McMillian deliberately avoided fulfilling his legal obligations, potentially endangering public safety.
Assistant United States Attorney Miranda E. Dugi is prosecuting the case. The government will bear the burden of proving McMillian’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt at trial. If convicted, the sentence will be determined by the court, taking into account factors such as McMillian’s criminal history and the nature of the violation. While the maximum sentence is yet to be determined, it will not exceed the statutory maximum.
“Compliance with sex offender registration laws is not optional,” stated a source within the U.S. Marshals Service, speaking on background. “These regulations are in place to protect our communities, and we take any violation seriously.”
An indictment is merely an accusation, and Charles McMillian is presumed innocent until proven guilty. He is entitled to a fair trial and legal representation. Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and provide updates as they become available. Details regarding arraignment and potential trial dates were not immediately available at press time.
